Paul raises goats in his backyard, but he admits that what really interests him is not the farming — it is the makinyonaz (the middleman who buys and resells on the sly). He is not the only one who takes up this practice: there is also Patrice le Gounifyol (the bottle collector), Youssouf the TV repairman, Cindy the samosa specialist, Kakouk the tizanèr (the one who heals), Yohan the mechanic of his housing estate, Jean-Louis the barber of his building, and many other Bourkantèr (who live off multiple undeclared activities); so many Standing Men, symbolising the struggle and the richness of Réunion.
